CONTRACTOR GROHMANN BURIED HERE MONDAY
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1, for 89-year old Albert Grohmann, retired building contractor, who died at 3 a.m. Saturday in Youens Memorial Hospital.
He had been in the hospital three weeks.
Services were held from Hubbard Funeral Chapel and St. Michael's Catholic Church, with burial in St. Michael's cemetery. Rev. Charles Carolan officiated.
Mr. Grohmann would have turned 90 on the 27th of this month. He was born Sept. 27, 1884 near Weimar, the son of Ferdinand and Marie Anders Grohmann, who had emigrated to the United States from Austria in 1870. He married Emma Berger here on Oct. 22, 1906, and they had two daughters and a son.
Mrs. Grohmann was actively engaged in farming and ranching all his life, but since 1909 his primary interest had been in the construction business. The great storm of that year destroyed or damaged many homes here, and Mr. Grohmann took time off from his farming to help rebuild. He did the work well, and he liked it so well that he turned his full time to building. He stayed in it actively for the next 46 years.
His son Wilbur returned from war service in 1946 and the two formed a partnership. Wilbur had learned the trade from his father. The company operated under the name of A. Grohmann & Son until 1855, when the elder partner began semi-retirement. He continued to serve as advisor and consultant to the company until the time of his death. The business took the name of A. Grohmann & Son Co. in 1955, with Wilbur as president. Today three of Albert Grohmann's grandsons also are associated with the firm which has become well known throughout South Central Texas.
Mr. Grohmann was a member of St. Michael's Church and for more than 60 years was a member of the Sons of Hermann, serving as president at one time.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Grohmann of Weimar; his son Wilbur Sr. of Weimar; two daughters, Mrs. Willie (Elsie) Vornsand and Mrs. Rafael (Adela) Vaselka; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Mary Yakesch of Rockdale; two brothers, Fred and Emil and a half-brother, Joe all of Weimar.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, James Horak, David Boethel, Irddle Vornsand, Wilbur Grohmann, Jr., Donald Grohmann and Clifford Grohmann. Acolytes for the services were Glenn Grohmann a grandson and Jimmie Mensik.
