James probably lived near the Arnold's Creek Cemetery and he is probably buried there as well, but no stone has been found.

His father Richard came to Wood County, VA around 1801, and Richard's pension application he said he had lived in Hampshire County for about 6 years (1795 to 1801) and prior to that he lived in Loudon County, Virginia for about two years (1793 to 1795). Before that Richard lived in Shenandoah County, VA. Therefore, it appears that James would have been born in Virginia, although his death record shows he was born in Pennsylvania. Due to James' age, it is likely that James came with his father Richard when Richard moved to Wood County around 1801. Tyler County was formed from southern Ohio County in 1814 and bordered on Wood and Harrison Counties to the south.

Proof that James was the son of Richard Dotson is in James' death register:

Date of death 12 Apr 1869; age 76 yr 8 mo 5 day; where born - PA; father Richard; mother not listed; information given by M. Dotson, son. It is possible that Amelia Miller was James' mother, but there is no documentation of this. The Pennsylvania boundary moved south with the Mason/Dixon line, so when James was born it might have been Virginia, but at time of death was then in Pennsylvania.

War of 1812 - a James Dotson served as a private 5th Regiment Virginia Militia, 6th Regiment Virginia Militia Lt. Col Dickinson, Lt. Col Scott & Lt Col Coleman - but it has not been documented that this is the same James.

James married Lucinda Clevis or Clevinger in Tyler County, about 1816, but no record of this marriage has been found. She was born 1796 in VA.

1820 census Tyler County shows James Dodson as head of household. At that time, part of Doddridge County would have been in Tyler County.

1822 Daughter Deborah was born in Ohio, so Lucinda and/or the family must have been in Ohio at least briefly.

1825 James Dotson is listed on the personal property list for Tyler County.

The original church was in the area of the present Arnold's Creek Cemetery, Greenwood, Doddridge County, WV. James' father, Richard, died in 1847 after the land was deeded to the church. According to the current owner of the farm on which the cemetery resides, the original Arnold's Creek church was located "on the level spot just in front of the 'Old Section' of the cemetery." The owner has the "level spot" fenced in now and uses it for his family cemetery.

1845 Doddridge County was formed and James served on the first grand jury.
