He was born April 20, 1924, in Beardstown, the son of Karmy Kosciusko and Nellie Fischer Kays.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Karmy Kays; four brothers, Joseph, Robert, Perry and Clifford Kays; and three sisters, Alice Holtsford, and Frances and Marjorie Kays.
Mr. Kays graduated from Beardstown High School, received a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and received his master's degree from University of Northern Colorado.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 during World War II on the USS New Mexico in the Pacific Theater.
He began his career in education by teaching school in Virginia, Ill., then moved to El Paso in 1953 to teach high school math and finally retired as principal of El Paso High School in 1981. Upon his retirement he moved to Texas.
He adored his children and grandchildren and loved playing cards and spending time with them.
