Baye and Gladys Wilson moved to Bailey County in December, 1943 with their four children, Marieta, Nelda Jo, Gordon and Stanley. They moved from Lipan, Texas in Hood County to the James St. Clair farm in Bailey County. While there, four more children blessed their home. Roger, Jan, Dianne and Mickey were all delivered by Dr. L.T. Green.
In December, 1949 they bought 40 acres in Muleshoe located behind the old Corral Drive Inn Restaurant. The family all helped with the cows and pigs and Gladys tended the 500 caged hens. Baye purchased a house moving truck and pump rig for him and the boys. The office was on the lot that is now Thriftway.
Their lives were again blessed with a last child. Cathy was a special child, she was born with cerebral palsy.
Dairy barns were built and all the family helped with this for several years. They bought a little grocery store and several rent houses on the Clovis highway. Baye, Stanley and Mickey ran a drilling rig until Baye died at work in 1965 at the age of 59 years. Stanley took over Wilson Drilling. Gladys ran the grocery store for a year and then went to work at Anthonys' in April, 1966 where she is still working part time.
The nine Wilson children all attended Muleshoe schools and have since moved several different directions.
Marieta married Pete Thomas and they farm at Morton with their son Steve and family. Their son Arthur was killed in a spray plane crash in 1985.
Nelda Jo is an LVN and lives in Lubbock as do her three sons: Nickey, Tracy and Chris. Her daughter Michelle is an airline stewardess. Jo's husband Bob Teter died of a stroke.
Gordon married a Muleshoe girl, Marilyn Mitchell. They own and manage Wilson Appliance Inc. Their son Danny married a Muleshoe girl, Susan Crittenden. They live in Canyon with their two daughters, D'Nae and Danielle. Danny is an assistant engineer. Kim also married a local boy, Gary Cox. They have two boys, Jeffery and Caleb. They are in the Army. Their youngest daughter Kendra is a high school student.
Stanley is married to a Muleshoe girl, Patricia Lewis. They have a son Casey who is in college and Andy is still home. Their oldest son, Roby was killed in an auto accident in 1985. Stanley still runs Wilson Drilling.
Roger married Kae Lyn Merwin. They met on wheat harvest. They have moved to North Dakota. Their three children, Jason, Jerrod and Jo Lanna, are still in school.
Jan lives in Hereford with her husband, Dr. Dale Furr and daughter Jennifer. Her three boys, Shannon, Kyle, and Gary, all live and work in Canadian.
Dianne married a local boy, James Brown and they farm north of Muleshoe. They have girls, Courtney and Jana at Texas Tech and Debbie still home.
Mickey married Jan Vetato. whom he met at college, and they live in her home town, Panhandle Texas. Mickey is assistant manager for Damson Oil Co. They have 2 boys, Jonathan and Nathan.
Cathy lives with Gladys and keeps house and handles her problems well. They are faithful members of the Church of Christ as are most of the Wilsons. The Wilsons are a very close family and have enjoyed many funny, happy and sad times togehter. (Submitted by Gladys Wilson)
