Telitha was born in 1839, the first child of James S & Cassie McIlroy born in Union Co. OH. (Until we made contact with a descendant of Telitha, her name was uncertain, variously reported as Tabitha, Tilipa, Delitha, etc.) She was a young girl of 12 or 13 when the family moved west to IL then on to IA. Based on her young age, she would probably have traveled with her father and brothers. That would have placed her in Whiteside Co., IL for about three years.
- Whiteside Co., IL to IA -
The guessing is stretched a bit here. If Telitha traveled with her father, she would have arrived in Bremer Co., IA around 1856, as a young woman. It is also possible she traveled with the Herd family to help with their two small children. That would have placed her in La Porte City, Black Hawk Co. The second possibility is more compatible with her location in 1860.
By the August 1860 census, Telitha was the new bride of Frank Bruce in Benton Co., IA, next door to his parents and 3 or 4 miles from her sister, Christina Herd, across the county line in La Porte City, Black Hawk Co.
The Bruce family later moved to La Port City. Both sons, Elmer and Charles, were born in IA.
- IA to Alberta, Canada -
Doris Bruce, daughter of Elmer and granddaughter of Frank and Telitha, was born about 1898 in IA. Before the 1900 US census, Telitha and Frank, with the families of their sons, immigrated to Lacombe, Alberta, Canada. They were noted on the 1901 census for Alberta. By accident or illness, Telitha died on 13 Dec 1901 of TB. Their son, Elmer, died on 14 Dec 1901 of TB. Telitha & Elmer are buried in the Fairview cemetery in Lacombe. Elmer's family returned to IA. Charles and his family remained in Canada.
