CARELESS MAN DEAD
Often Warned, Robert Akers Victim of Accident.
LOG CRUSHES HIS LEG
———————————-
Injury Thought Not Serious, but Death Results Next Day —His Father Had Predicted Fatal Ending but Two Weeks Ago.

SILVERTON, Or., March 6 —(Special)
In spite of the fact that he had been warned many times to be more careful, Robert B. Akers persisted in his carelessness about his work in a lumber camp and paid for it with his life.

At the Silverton Lumber Companies camp, where Akers was working, cars are loaded by a large derrick operated by a donkey engine. Akers had fastened the cable at either end of the log and standing near the car, signaled the engineer to go ahead.

Instead of swinging as he expected when the cable tightened, the log jumped over the pile 20 feet from where Akers was standing and was hurled at him with terrific force. The huge catapult pinned him to another log and his right leg was crushed to a pulp.

Akers was brought to this city and Dr. Kleinsorge attended to his wound. His condition was not considered critical, but he gradually grew weaker and died 12 hours after the accident.

Last summer Akers narrowly missed death when he was run over by a horse at Mount Angel. Two weeks ago his father cautioned him and told him he expected to have to bring out his dead body from camp unless he was more careful.
