Wilhelmina Schalk, daughter of John and Ernestine (Dettloff) Schalk, was born 16 Dec 1866, in Braunswerder, Kreis Lauenburg, Hinterpommern, Prussia. She emigrated to America with her parents and family about 1872 and settled in Belknap Township where the family is first noted in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.

She received her religious education at St Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belknap where she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith on 21 March 1880 by the Rev. Joseph Antonius Bohn. Her memory verse for life is Psalm 37:4.

On April 11, 1893, she was united in marriage with George John Bruning, son of John and Wilhelmine (Adrian) Bruning. Per St Michael's church records witnesses at their marriage by the Rev. Bruno Potzger were Johann Schalk, Sr. and Johann Bruning. George's occupation is listed as "Schmied" [blacksmith].

To this marriage were born five children:

Wilhelmina was called home by her Lord on July 27, 1940, at the age of 73 Years, 7 Months, 11 Days. She received a Christian funeral at St John's Lutheran Church in Rogers City and her body was laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery there to wait the great day of Resurrection.
