George John Bruning was born August 27, 1869, of German immigrant parents John Martin and Wilhelmine (Adrian) Bruning in Wolcottsville, Niagara County, New York. His father was a Civil War Veteran with the New York Volunteer 3rd Calvary Regiment CO. F. George was the second oldest of ten siblings.

In the early 1870's, George's father moved his family from New York to Michigan, settling in Belknap Township where the family is registered in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.

There he attended both public school and received religious instruction at St Michael's Lutheran Church where George was confirmed 6 April 1884 by the Rev. Bruno Potzger.

On April 11, 1893, George was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Schalk, daughter of John and Ernestine (Dettloff) Schalk. Per St Michael's church records witnesses at their marriage by the Rev. Bruno Potzger were Johann Schalk, Sr. and Johann Bruning. George's occupation is listed as "Schmied" [blacksmith].

To this marriage were born five children:

George was called home by his Lord on November 18, 1931, at the age of 62 Years, 2 Months, 22 Days. He received a Christian funeral at St John's Lutheran Church in Rogers City and his body was laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery there to wait the great day of Resurrection.
