James married Mrs. Hester Emmaline (nee Adams) Holman on 14 Feb 1875 in Huntsville, Randolph County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William T. Adams and Frances Griffith. Hester was the mother of 1 son, Dexter, from her first marriage to John Holman before their divorce.

The family lived in Carroll County, Missouri by 1880. 2 years later, they moved to Barton County, Missouri for a short time, and then lived in Butler County, Missouri for 5 years.
