The oldest son of Abraham Wagaman and Mary Walden, James was a soldier during the Civil War. He served from 1862-1863 with the 35th Regiment of the Missouri Militia in Company D. His military record indicated that he was a hemophiliac.

James married Mrs. Hester Emmaline (nee Adams) Holman on 14 Feb 1875 in Huntsville, Randolph County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William T. Adams and Frances Griffith. Hester was the mother of 1 son, Dexter, from her first marriage to John Holman before their divorce.

James and Hester were the parents of 5 children. The family lived in Carroll County, Missouri by 1880. 2 years later, they moved to Barton County, Missouri for a short time, and then lived in Butler County, Missouri for 5 years. After that, they returned to Barton County for the rest of their lives.

At the time of his death, James was 78 years, 3 months and 29/30* days old. He was survived by his wife.

Hester passed away in 1916 and was buried next to James.
