His mother called him "Bobby" because he was always bouncing around. The name stuck and he became known as Bob as he grew older.
He grew up mostly in Weston, WV and had four brothers and one sister. He skipped one grade in elementary school, but then was failed one year in high school due to illness (asthma). However, he did complete 12 years of school and graduated from Doddridge County High School.
He and his future wife, Edith, were in the same class in high school, but were not friends at the time. They met again in Washington, DC in early 1944. Bob had been recently discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard and Edith was on a visit to Washington from her work at Westinghouse electric in Fairmont, WV.
They were married on April 14, 1944.
Another nickname Bob acquired was "Double "O," which came from his peers during his early years with the Prince Georges County Police Department. Bob was a member of the PGPD from 1950 - 1973, retiring as Lieutenant.
