British barrister and colonial administrator. He was educated at Cambridge University, where he read Law and Arabic, During the First World War, he fought with the Royal Gloucester Regiment at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia. In 1930, he was appointed Solicitor General to Palestine, which was then a British Mandated Territory. Three years later, however, he was assassinated outside the King David Hotel. He and his wife, Nina, had two sons: Neil (1920-2003), and Denholm, the latter of whom went on to become a well-known actor.
