Merlin Leigh Zeigler, 77, of Grand Island, NE, formerly of North Platte, died December 30, 2009, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Merlin was born October 2, 1932, to Harley Ray and Lula Jessie Jolliff Zeigler at North Platte where he grew up. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1950. He later went to work for the Ogier's Ford Garage, Blue Ribbon Brase Distributing, Nebraska Game and Fish, Armour's Meat Packing in Denver and North Platte and the Denver Lamb Meat Packing Company. Merlin served in the U.S. Air Force from January 29, 1952, to January 16, 1956, and served in Germany and France. He had a stroke in June 1995 then moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island in July. Merlin was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion and a past member of the V.F.W. and Eagles.Survivors include his stepsister, Dona (Dean) Ostergaard of Woodland, CA; stepbrothers, Ernest (Carol) Thayer of Lincoln, NE and Dwaine (Cathy) Thayer of Placentia, CA; nieces, nephews, and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather. Funeral services were January 5, 2010, at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. Burial with military honors in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
