Herbert Andress, of 918 Paoli Pike, West Chester, former superintendent of mails of the West Chester Post Office and for several years president of that borough's Good Will Fire Co., died last night at the Memorial Hospital, west Chester. He was78.
Mr. Andress was born at Unionville. He retired in 1956 after 40 years of service with the West Chester Post Office. He was superintendent of mails at the time of his retirement.
He was chief of the West Chester Fire Dept. in 1949, the year of the borough's sesquicentennial. An enthusiastic sportsman and hunter, he was a member of the West Chester Fish and Game Club, and a member or West Chester Lodge 853, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Mr. Andress was the son of Frederick and Ella Condegrift Andress.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche B. Andress, a daughter, Edwin D. Fox, at home; two sons, Charles H. and Herbert J., both of West Chester; two sisters, Mrs. William H. Hill, of West Chester, and Mrs. Joseph Montague of Glenolden; three brothers, Charles H., of West Chester; Casper, of Ormand Beach, Fla., and Joseph of Lancaster; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends also the Good Will Fire Company No. 2, and the West Chester Lodge B.P.O. Elks No. 853 are invited to attend the funeral at the Smith Funeral Home, 115 E. Gay St, West Chester, on Thursday, May 7th at 2 o'clock p.m.
Interment at Green Mount Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7 to 9.
