Velois ''Butchie'' Sedwick King, 89, died of natural causes Dec. 26, 2000, at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home.
Mrs. King was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Kittanning, Pa. She came to Alaska for a visit in 1963 and ''never got the place out of her blood,'' her family said. There were three intervals of residences Outside, but she always returned. Mrs. King had a career in retail sales that included jobs in Anchorage at the Esquire Shop, J. Vic Brown & Sons', Rosita's, Northern Commercial Co. and Nordstrom. At age 89, she outlived most of the businesses that employed her. Besides sales work, she found time to care for the children of relatives and friends and sometimes worked as a nanny. Her family also said: ''An accomplished baker and pastry chef whose creations fed her own sweet tooth and those of her friends, 'Butchie' made the best cinnamon rolls this side of heaven, a treat which for some reason the children called 'wildcat food.' '' 'Butchie' had a fine sense of humor, and her infectious laugh ignited merriment at many gatherings.'' She will be missed, her family added. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Tunis King.
She is survived by her brother, William G. Sedwick of Kittanning; nieces, Cindy Benton of Tampa, Fla., and Katherine Platz of Seattle; and nephews, William R. Sedwick and John W. Sedwick of Anchorage. A brief graveside service is planned for spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 3201 C St., Suite 610, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown.
