TYLER, Texas — Roy M. Adams, 88, of Tyler, Texas, died at 12:47 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Hilltop Haven Care Center in Gunter, Texas. He had resided in Tyler since 1988.

He was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Roy C. and Idella M. (Peets) Adams. He attended schools in Parsons, Kansas and graduated from Parsons High School in 1939. He attended Parsons Junior College and later attended Pittsburg State University under the G.I. Bill and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in January 1955.

He enlisted in the Naval Construction Battalions (Seabees) in the summer of 1942. He married Martha K. Marvin on Nov. 25, 1942, at Parsons Church of the Nazarene. Three days after the wedding, he reported for active duty and served the duration of the war and was discharged on Nov. 3, 1945, with the rank of machinist's mate, second class (CB), v6 USNR.

Roy and Martha lived in Parsons, Kansas with their three children until 1958, when they moved to Kansas City, Mo. In Kansas City, they were joined by another child and the part-time additions of a niece and nephew. They resided in Raytown, Missouri., until they retired in 1988 and moved to Tyler, Texas. Mrs. Adams preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2009.

He was a whirlwind of activity all of his life. His three priorities were God, family and work ethic, always in that order. He held many positions within the Church of the Nazarene, assisting with the daily business and growth of the church. He was instrumental in the building of two Nazarene churches, one in Raytown and one in Tyler, and promoted the layman's organizations for the church. He was instrumental in developing Youth for Christ, a non-denominational organization designed to give children through their teen years a place to grow through Christian-based teaching. He participated in many Work and Witness trips through the church and visited other parts of the world in an attempt to spread the word of God. He was a longtime member of the Gideons, assisting in the raising of funds to provide Bibles to the most unlikely locations in the world.

Reunions of family and friends were a constant for him, including the Cutshall reunions in Fort Scott, Kansas and the Adams reunions in Raytown, Mo and Tyler, Tx. He was always a part of the 60th Seabees Reunion held each year in the fall. That reunion continued through this year and was faithfully attended by Roy and his wife until 2007, when their health began to fail. Parsons High School reunions of the Class of 1942 (Martha's class) were also important, and they attended them for more than 65 years.

The "Can Do" spirit was always the basis of his working career. He spent 40 years with Allstate Insurance Co. Working as an insurance sales agent in Parsons, he was soon promoted to a position of sales trainer and transferred to the regional office in Kansas City, Mo. After a few years, the desire to sell the product became his focus.

After retiring from Allstate in 1988 and moving to Tyler, Tx, he became a part of the flower growing industry of Smith County. He grew plants and flowers from the greenhouses constructed on his property. He was a member of the Tyler and Longview Farmers Markets, where he sold these items as well as fruits and vegetables.

Survivors include his children, Linda K. Giles and her husband, C. Gene, David J. Adams and his wife, Linda, Pegi S. Merriman and her husband, David, and Timothy R. Adams; a niece and a nephew who spent part of their early life in the Adams home, Debbie Baker-Coffman and Daniel Baker; a brother, William F. "Bill" Adams; a sister, Wanda M. Popejoy; grandchildren, Jeffrey A. Giles and his partner, Jesse Mejas, James A. Giles, Jennifer A. Williams, Jan A. Simpson and her husband, David, Elizabeth L. Giles, Sarah L. Williams, Jake C. Simpson, Jessica C. Simpson, Jeffrey T. Giles, Joshua A. Williams, Katie Shields, Ashlie Shields, C.J. Shields, Rayce Baker and Chassis Baker.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons Kansas. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Parsons Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of East Texas and may be left at or sent to the funeral home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
