Victor Samuel Peterson was born in Swede Hollow near Oakley, Iowa, on March 27, 1898. He passed away on June 14, 1996, at the age of 98.

Victor was the eighth of nine children born to Gustaf and Emily Carlson Peterson, Swedish immigrants who couldn't speak English. The family settled down to farming in Swede Hollow where the family grew up, the oldest children learning English at school and then taught the younger ones.

Vick was confirmed at the age of seventeen at the First Lutheran Church in Chariton. He remained a faithful servant throughout his life.

As Vick grew up he found that he had a knack for working on cars, Model T's and the like. He had a garage in Oakley. He went to mechanic school in Portland, Ore., and Des Moines.

Vick met Grace Mikesell in Oakley. After their courtship, they were married in Chariton at the U. B. Church on July 3, 1923. They lived in West Des Moines and Des Moines.

Vick was employed by the Rock Island Railroad in Valley Junction, Iowa. He lost his job during the depression and did carpentry and odd jobs. In January , 1932, they moved back to his home farm and continued farming until his retirement.

During his farming years, Vick was active in 4-H as a leader and continued after his sons were grown. He was on the local school board, was a township assessor, active in Farm Bureau, and sealed corn for many years throughout the county. Vick served on the 4-H Achievement Board and helped build the 4-H buildings. In retirement, Vick remained busy, He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the I.O.O.F. Lodge, the Lucas County Historical Society, serving as past president, and a longtime R.S.V.P. Volunteer.

Vick and Grace traveled extensively, visiting every state except Alaska. They also traveled overseas with the Friendship Force and enjoyed many bank sponsored trips.

Grace passed away in October of 1987.

Vick married Lola Dewey Bell on August 18, 1990 in Evansville, Ind. They have enjoyed the company of many friends and especially enjoyed playing cards. They loved to play Cribbage. They have traveled by car, bus, train and plane. They have been very happy and Lola has strived to take excellent care of him.

Vick is survived by his loving wife, Lola; his children, Russell Mikesell and wife Evelyn; Rodney Peterson and wife Bonnie, all of Chariton; Beverly Ansley of Torrance, Calif.; Barbara Walker and husband Al of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and David Peterson and wife Nancy of Pomona, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He is also survive by three step-children, Bernard Dewey of Charlotte, N.C.; Jylene Wright of Evansville, Ind.; and Lloyd Bell of Russell; one sister, Selma Paine of Cedar Falls; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many good friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 17, 1996, at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Norman Bennett officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Grandsons, Larry Mikesell, Mark Mikesell, Charles Walker, Russell Walker, Curtis Walker and Stuart Walker served as bearers. Honorary bearers included Chet Woods, Ralph Willis, Marion Coons, Dwight Vredenburg, Dr. Robert Grappendorf, Bob Hellyer, Pete Best and Bob Shutte.
