MRS. GUST A. PETERSON

Emily Christina, eldest daughter of Erland and Venla Carlson, was born in Elghult socken, Kalmar Lan, Smaland, Sweden, on June 4, 1857, and passed away February 18, 1939, in Chariton, Iowa, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arvid Englund, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 14 days.

She came to this country in year of 1880 and in the fall of that year her church membership was transferred from Sweden to the First Lutheran church in Chariton.

On March 6, 1883, she was united in marriage to Gustav A. Peterson, and to this union were born nine children. They are Mrs. Hannah Englund, Carl G. Peterson and Victor Peterson, all of Chariton; Enoch G. Peterson, of Des Moines; Mrs. Adla A. Foster, of Temple City, California; Mrs. Emma H. Sandy, Des Moines; Mrs. Hildur J. Curtis, Richland, Montana; Mrs. Selma F. Paine, Cedar Falls; Mrs. Laura A. Jennison, Albia.

Besides her children she is survived by twenty-two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Johnson, of Nybro, Sweden, and Mrs. Amanda Wadstrom, of Des Moines, Iowa, and a number of relatives and friends who will mourn her passing.

On April 15, 1938, less than a year ago, her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. and Mrs. Peterson lived most of their lives on the old Peterson homestead in Liberty township and there their family was raised. They retired from the farm in 1920, and moved to Chariton where they spent their declining years.

Mrs. Peterson was baptized and confirmed in the church in Sweden. She was always interested in the work of the church and was a regular attendant at services all of her life. She was a true christian mother and her joy was the Word of God and the songs of christian faith and she was faithful, together with her husband, to maintain the family altar. Her heart and her mind were full of the songs of the church.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. W. Thorwald, were held Monday afternoon at the First Lutheran church, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery.

Among the number from a distance in attendance at the funeral services were Enoch G. Peterson and son, Richard; Mrs. Florence Kern and Mrs. Lillian Johnson, Des Moines; Mrs. Adla A. Foster, Temple City, Calif.; Mrs. Hilder J. Curtis, Richland, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Paine and daughter, Wilma, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Sandy and three daughters, West Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Jennison and three daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Orr, of Albia.
