VICTORIA - John O. Hnatek, 83, of Victoria, left this world Feb. 6, 2008. He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, a respected businessman who served his country in the United States Army during World War II, and offered his leadership through various organizations in the Victoria community throughout his life. John was born Nov. 18, 1924, in DaCosta, to the late Joseph and Vlasta Schiller Hnatek.

He graduated as the salutatorian of his class from Patti Welder High School and was drafted in the United States Army. He was sent overseas and served in combat at the Battle of Huertgen Forest. He then saw action at the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded, and as a result, received the Purple Heart. He returned home and continued his education at the University of Texas in Austin. After graduation he returned to Victoria and entered the business sector. He was a founding partner of Roloff and Hnatek where he worked as a CPA for over 40 years. He was a very active member of the Boulevard Lions Club and attended First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Faye Nichols Hnatek of Victoria; daughter, Jan Hnatek West and her husband, Jim, of Broaddus; son, Joe Hnatek and his wife, Lynn, of Lubbock; sister, Margaret Hnatek of Victoria; grandchildren, John Franklin West, Sarah Hnatek, Joshua Hnatek, Caleb Hnatek, and Samuel Hnatek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Rosewood Funeral Chapels.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at First Baptist Church, the Revs. Shawn Nichols and James Shamburger officiating. Burial with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council, AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, Ex-POW, MOPH, VVA and KWV will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John West, Joshua Hnatek, James West, Bill Nichols, Dr. Oscar Zuniga, and Dr. Jerry Pentecost.
