Dies, Age 65


GALLIPOLIS, Mrs. Carl Askew, 65, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday at her home, 721 Third Ave., after a stroke late Thursday morning. She had had several strokes, one a year ago.

Born Nov. 10, 1888, at Southside, W.Va., to Charles and Margaret Zapp Woyan. Lizzie Woyan married Carl Askew Aug. 30, 1916, at Ravenna, Ohio. Two years later they moved to Gallia County from West Virginia, and they built the first home in what is now Hanersville.

It is now owned by Will Brumfield. Mr. and Mrs. Askew lived there until 1937, operating a farm.

He is survived by her husband; one son, Carl D. Askew of 215 1/2 Third Avenue, service manager at Smith Buick, and one granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Gise of Southside and Mrs. Maggie Adams of Talmadge, Ohio; two brothers, Charles Woyan and Will Woyan, both of Southside.

A sister and two brothers, Mrs. Barbara Williamson and Edward and Herman Woyan, preceded her in death. She was a member of Mount Zion Methodist Church on Route 35.

Final rites will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the C.J. Waugh funeral home, the Rev. S.C. Hoelle pastor of the First Church of God, officiating and interment will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery at Cheshire.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Friday.
