Emma Jane Freels, the daughter of William Mattox Freels and Emma Jane Lawler Freels was born October 26, 1895 in Haywood Co, TN, and died February 17, 1982 in Hardeman Co., TN. She married Ben Phillips about 1920, son of William Phillips and Nancy Walk Phillips. He was born March 11, 1896, and died July 13, 1962 in Hardeman Co., TN.

OBITUARY as it appeared in the Jackson Sun, Jackson, TN, February 18, 1982: Mrs. Emma Phillips, Whiteville - Services for Mrs. Emma Freels Phillips, 87, will be 10:30a.m. Friday with the Rev. Claudie Hammers officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Phillips, widow of Ben Phillips, died Wednesday afternoon at Community Hospital of Bolivar after a long illness. She was a Haywood County native and a member of Mid-Way Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Donald Williams and Mrs. Tommy Goodman, both of Whiteville; a brother, Ray Freels of Whiteville; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Otis Benard, Steve Allen, Eddie Phillips, Edwin Phillips, Jr., Jimmy Goodman and Carl Dowdy.

Mrs. Phillips was a life long resident of the county and a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was the widow of Ben Phillips. Services were held at 10:0 Friday, February 19, at Brownsville Funeral Home, with Rev. Claudie Hammers officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Donald Williams and Mrs. Tommy Goodman, both of Whiteville; a brother, Ray Freels of Whiteville; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
