When the girls were five and eight years old, Betsey became the second wife of JOHN CALVIN McCOY on 17 Apr 1850. McCoy was the founder of Westport, Missouri, and Kansas City, Missouri. Westport was later incorporated into Kansas City, Missouri. In marrying McCoy, Betsey took on the responsibility of raising several of John's children by his first wife, VIRGINA CHICK McCOY. John's children were all under the age of 12. Betsey and John also had four children together. John's mother CHRISTIANA McCOY also lived with them.
