John was married to Nancy Cowan on March 26, 1812 at Franklin County, TN. She was his first cousin, daughter of Major John Cowan, his mother's brother. John served as Sheriff and Justice of the Peace of Franklin County. His parents were Samuel Carroll Handley and Susannah Cowan.

John received three land grants in Franklin County, TN in 1827 and 1828 from the state of North Carolina.

Son, Albert Gibson Handley-married Margaret C. Patrick, June 26, 1850, Franklin Co., TN. He became a school teacher, then doctor. He attended medical school at the University of Nashville. They were on the 1860 & 1870 Census in Franklin County, TN, but seem to disappear after that. They had two children, John & Martha.

Note: The couple who were listed on the 1850 Census in Franklin County, TN with John and Nancy were Methodist Minister, Rev. Hillary Young Garrison, his wife, Jane Ellen (Alexander)Garrison and newborn daughter, Nancy Ellen Garrison. According to some descendants, the wife and baby died soon after the census was taken.
