Florence ("Flo" or "Flossie") Elliott Boydston Bird, 81, formerly of Waldport, died in her sleep Feb. 10, 2005 in Portland. She was the sixth of seven children born to prominent fruit growers, Wes and Myrtle Elliott in Dallas, Ore.

She attended Oregon State College and graduated with a degree in physical education in 1945. She started her teaching/coaching career at Milwaukie High School. In 1948 she married her high school sweetheart, Jack Boydston. She taught at Corvallis High School while he completed his degree at Oregon State College.

In 1951 they moved to Waldport where they raised four children. In 1961 she resumed her teaching/coaching at Waldport High School. Her volleyball teams were undefeated league champions for several years. She loved all sports. Since athletics were not available to women, she played semi-pro softball in high school through her early 20s.

Jack died in 1969. In 1979 she married longtime family friend Joe Bird. They enjoyed playing golf, traveling and entertaining friends and family. Joe died in 1992, and she moved to Portland to be closer to her family.

She is survived by her four children, Tracey Clark, Jackie Lamb, Brad Boydston and Cindy Boydston; five grandchildren, Brittney Clark, Stephanie Lamb, Michael Lamb, Jack Boydston and Scott Boydston; two stepchildren, Joe Bird, Jr. and Lynn Jeffress; five step-grandchildren, Justine Bird, Noah Bird, Nick Jeffress, Jocelyn West and Mark West.
