Jeanne Lambert's Obituary:

Jeanne Lambert, 82, retired assistant professor of communication and director of the Fort Hays State University Relations News Bureau, died May 8, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center in Hays, Kansas.

Jeanne was the only child born to Calvin Hood Lambert and Katharine Elizabeth (Ellis) Lambert in Emporia, Kansas in 1927. They preceded her in death. Family survivors include cousin Dr. Earl Gatz and wife Nancy, Olathe, Kansas; Jessica Gatz of Preston, Kansas; and George and Rose Mary Cheney of Lakewood, Florida.

After graduating from Emporia High School, Jeanne took two Bachelor's degrees from the University of Kansas and later earned a Master's degree from the University of Wyoming. She also had course work from Fort Hays State University, Emporia State University, College of Emporia, and the University of Northern Colorado.

Jeanne's long and illustrious career began as a reporter for the Emporia Gazette in 1949. She later worked as a reporter for the Garden City, Kansas Telegram; the Casper, Wyoming Morning Star, and the Hays Daily News. She also worked one year, 1956-57, as a writer for the News Service Office at Fort Hays State University.

Jeanne first joined academe as a high school teacher at Natrona County High School in Casper, Wyoming in 1961. After a two-year career there, she joined the staff at the Wyoming Extension Service in Casper as agriculture editor. In 1970 Kansas was calling Jeanne home and she joined the faculty at Garden City Community College as an instructor of journalism, agriculture communications, English studies, and as student newspaper advisor. In 1977 she returned to Hays as a member of the faculty at FHSU and carried the titles of instructor of journalism, director of the news bureau, and student advisor.

During her 15 year association with FHSU, Jeanne taught and mentored hundreds of budding young journalists and student workers and won numerous personal accolades. Her award from the Council for the Advancement of Support of Education for her "Today" publication was a highlight as was her induction into the Kansas Scholastic Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995.

During her career at FHSU, Jeanne was a member of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association; Kansas Press Women; National Education Association, and many campus groups. She also served admirably on dozens of campus and state-wide committees.

An animal lover and avid bird watcher, Jeanne's favorite pastimes included raising and playing with dogs, especially those who were homeless; horseback riding; rooting for the Kansas University Jayhawk basketball team and the FHSU Tigers; building bird houses and feeders; traveling, and just being outdoors.

Locally, Jeanne was a member of Business and Professional Women; First Methodist Church, and the Hays Humane Society where she served on the Board of Directors. She also was a member of the Kansas Federation of Humane Societies and helped write and lobby for a bill which prohibited sub-standard kennels in Kansas. The bill became known as the Puppy Mill Bill and received national attention.

Jeanne, a truly dedicated recycler, helped organize the Hays chapter of the AARP and was one of the original members of the Generations Advisory Group which brought forth the Generations section of the Wednesday edition of the Hays Daily News.

Bob Lowen, a co-worker of Jeanne's for 15 years at FHSU, said, "Jeanne was an excellent teacher and mentor. She never entered class unprepared and she sent young journalists out into the world ready and able to do a good job. Additionally, she was like a mother-away-from-home for many young students. Her student writers and helpers could confide in her and today they still ask about Jeanne Lambert, one of their all-time favorite people."

A memorial service for Jeanne will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Clines Mortuary, 1919 East 22nd Street in Hays, Kansas. Inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Pratt, Kansas at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the New Dimensions Unit of the Hays Good Samaritan Center, 27th and Canal Streets in Hays, or to the Jeanne Lambert Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Fort Hays State University Foundation, 1 Tiger Place, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Condolences can be sent via e-mail to [email protected].
