William Walter Johnson, 78, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lane Boyd, pastor, and the Rev. Kevin Deckard, associate pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Walter was born Jan. 16, 1931, in Wellington, the pride and joy of Dr. J. Frank and Margaret Johnson and died Dec. 29, 2009, of heart failure and boarded the chairlift to heaven. Walter was a Wellington Skyrocket, played football and basketball at Tarleton State until he left school to join the U.S. Navy, where he traveled the world aboard the USS Everglades from 1950 through 1954.

After his military service, he attended and graduated from Texas Tech, where he met Dorothy Keele. They married in 1956, having a son Drew F. Johnson in 1958 in Kermit. The family moved in 1960 to Amarillo. After Dorothy's passing in 1980, Walter married Bette Boone in 1984.

Walter worked as a cowboy, cattle feeder and rancher until retirement, at which time he started substitute teaching for Amarillo Independent School District - which he loved.

He was an active member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and was a member and an officer in the Rotary Club for many years. Walter enjoyed life and always brought a smile to those around him with his humor, his harmonica or stories of his exploits. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, motorcycling, bicycling, white-water rafting, scuba diving and snow skiing. Walter even qualified and competed in the National NASTAR (amateur snow ski racing) finals from ages 72 through 77.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Bette; four sons, Drew Johnson and wife Becky of Dallas, Mark Wright and wife Lorie of Greenville and Mike Wright and wife Paige of Amarillo and John Wright and wife Erin of Baltimore; five grandchildren, Adam Wright with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Guam, Chris Wright with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Las Vegas, Ashley Wright of Campbell and Amelia and Chloe Wright of Baltimore; two stepgrandsons, Jon Shaw and Nick Noel of Amarillo; a great-granddaughter, Brylee Lunceford; and a host of Hatches, Campbells and Keeles throughout Texas.

Walter treated everyone with kindness and respect. He lived by Will Rogers' motto: "He never met a person he didn't like." He led by example and if a friend was in need, he was there to help. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Polk Street United Methodist Church, 1401 South Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or Opportunity Plan of Canyon, P.O. Box 1035, Canyon, TX 79015.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.
