Dr John Franklin Johnson, age 99, long time Wellington resident, died Thursday, August 10, 1995 in Wellington. Funeral services were held at 10 am Saturday, August 12, 1995 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Ulrey, pastor, officiating. Burial was in South Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tommy Campbell, Kirby Campbell, Jimmy Campbell, Tim Campbell, Tim Hatch and Gary Starkey.
He was bom the youngest of nine children to Williams and Matilda Heard Johnson on May 5, 1896 in Sequachie County, north of Chattanooga, TN. It was here he acquired his love for the outdoors, fishing and hunting along the valley of the Sequanchie River that ran near his family home.
With the aid and encouragement of his older brother, the late R C Clyde Johnson of Dalhart, J Frank was able to take the entrance exam at the University of Louisville and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in the Class of 1924. After receiving his DDS, he moved to Wellington where he opened his practice.
Here he met Margaret Campbell, the daughter of Walter and Minnie Leslie Campbell. They married in Mangum, OK in 1927. She died in 1974.
Dr J Frank Johnson practiced dentistry in Wellington for almost 50 years, while actively engaged in farming and ranching in Childress County. He retired from his farming and ranching in 1991.
In addition to belonging to several Panhandle and Texas Dental Associations, he was a 32nd Degree Mason and had been an active member of many civic organizations. Throughout his life, he continued his love for all sports, particularly baseball and was an avid bowler until the age of 90. A lifelong Methodist, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Wellington.
When a new name was sought for Wellington High School's sports teams, it was his suggestion of "Skyrockets" which was selected.
Survivors include his son, Walter Johnson of Amarillo and a grandson, Drew Johnson of Memphis, TN.
The family suggests memorials to the First United Churh or a favorite Charity.
