Arriving in the United States in 1856, in 1860 he was a potter and farmer presumably living in Little Britain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 9, 1862, as "Joseph John Stone," mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. B, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. He also enlisted in Lancaster during the Gettysburg crisis (again as "Stone"), mustered into state service there June 30, 1863, as a private with Co. A, 50th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1863. From September 1864 through November 1865, he claimed to have served with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department in Co. B, 1st Regiment, 2nd Battalion, stationed in Nashville, Tennessee. However, records show he actually had been hired as a civilian carpenter. His own testimony revealed that he met his wife in 1864 while boarding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he later admitted to living in Pittsburgh from February 1864 until 1874. Obviously, then, he was not in Nashville during the time he specified. His pension file contains only his duty roster and no other documents.

He married Pennsylvania-born Margaret Philomena Kappler, eight years his junior, on July 16, 1865, in Pittsburgh, although none of their children survived them. After marriage, the couple lived in various locations, including Liverpool, Ohio, New Brighton, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and by 1900 at Oak Harbor, Island County, Washington. The pension office dropped him from the rolls ca. 1907. There is a photo of him in his pension file in which he claims "Sants" as his real surname. The widowed Margaret moved her birth home of Pittsburgh where she died November 3, 1924. His grave is unmarked.
