Sr Margaret (Peggy) McElwee, IHM, died Friday, April 9, 2010, in the IHM Health Care Center, Monroe. She was 83.

In 1981, Sr Peggy transferred to the Monroe IHM congregation from the IHM congregation in Philadelphia PA. A favorite quote of Peggy's was "Traveler, there is no path, paths are made by walking."

Sr Peggy was one of three children, one boy and two girls, of Anthony and Margaret (Ryan) McElwee. She was born June 30, 1926 in Philadelphia and given the name Margaret Mary. She attended St Athanasius Elementary School in W Oak Lane and Little Flower High School in Philadelphia.

Sr Peggy earned a Bachelor's degree from Immaculata College in Immaculata PA. She taught in formal education for 28 years. While in the Philadelphia IHM community, she taught in schools in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Peru. Peggy took a leave of abstence and worked 11 years as personnel director, Atlas Chemical Industries Inc (ICI Americas Inc), Wilmington DE, before returning to religous life and transferring to the Monroe IHM community.

In 1981, after entering the Monroe IHM community, she taught and served in several ministries, including in the IHM Motherhouse Health Care Center; Catholic Offices in the diocese of Toledo OH; Cabrini High School in Allen Park MI; and at St Mary Conference Center in Monroe as coordinator of programs and development.

In 1995 Sr Peggy retired to the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. She volunteered in various ministries until 2002 when she was admitted to the Health Care Center, where she resided until her death.

Sr Peggy is survived by her sister, Patricia (Patsy), and nieces and nephews. Her brother, Anthony, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W Elm Avenue, Monroe, on Thursday, April 15 from 2 until 7:30 pm with a Remembering at 3 pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel on Friday, April 16 at 10 am. Burial will follow in St Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe.

Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W Elm Ave, Monroe MI 48162-7909.
