John and Barbara Hart arrived in Lafayette by the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1847. They built a brick house at 17th and Underwood which still stands but is in very poor condition.
Newspaper articles mention that John Purdue and Peter Longlois were friends of the family and often visited.
