Walter was of medium build and had black hair. For a time he homesteaded with one of his brothers. He worked as a farmer and then went into the insurance business and established a real estate business.
After three years of marriage, Walter's first wife, Sarah Avaline Bennett died. He then was married to Della Mae Walker and, after her death, to Annie Haynes Moulton. He is buried between Avaline and Della. Annie is buried in Jasper, Missouri.
