Jesse Allison Owensby was the youngest son and the ninth of ten childen born to Lorenzo Dow and Lyddia Butcher Owensby. When Jesse was two and a half his mother died and his sisters took over his care.

As a young boy Jesse helped his father and brothers on the farm. When he was about 14 he was kicked by a mule and was on crutches for some time. Jesse was good with a gun and used to shoot the pigeons in the wheat bin.

The family was acquainted with the Engle family. In 1918 Jesse was married to Mabel Engle. Together they had three children.

Following in the steps of his mother and several of his siblings, Jesse became a school teacher. He continued his education and earned his doctorate. Jesse served as a superintendent of schools in Lindsay, Oklahoma and Dewitt, Arkansas.

In addition to his work in the schools Jesse was a member of First Christian Church in Lindsay, Oklahoma and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
