Herman Decker was a soldier during the Civil War, enlisting in Co. A, 19th Mass Inf. Vols., using the name George Brown. Herman (alias George Brown) was captured by the Confederates in May 1864 at Spotsylvania, VA, and eventually taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Herman/George Brown was paroled from Andersonville in Dec.1864 and discharged from the army in June 1865.
