McLean County Journal, 8 May 1947. Had a shoe shop in Turtle Lake before 1925. Jacob is listed on the 1930 Census living in Turtle Lake with his wife. The house they owned is still standing but the shoe shop is now used for other purposes. 1920 Census on farm at Township 148, R 80, Jakob, Lydia, Helena, Edgar, and Adeline age 12. Land was located just out of Turtle Lake. He and his wife and their five children came to the Turtle lake community by emigrant train in the spring of 1909 from Eureka, South Dakota. They bought and lived on a farm six miles northeast of Turtle Lake
During the winter Jacob drove the school sleigh, picking up children along the way and delivering them to the Crooked Lake School. He spent his day at school carrying in coal and wood, keeping the schoolhouse warm. Then after school, he made the trip back delivering the children to their various home. In the winter, it was dark before he got home.
Then came World War I. His oldest son, Gotthilf was drafted and gone for two years.
On a Sunday morning in June of 1923, the sky darkened and by noon a tornado came down and badly damaged Jacob's house. They had to clean up and rebuild most of their home. The whole area for miles around felt the effects of the disaster. All those who could had to find jobs to make a living for winter was coming. Jacob, to help out and provide for the family, did carpenter work and built chimneys.
In October of 1928 Jacob and Louise decided to leave the farm and move to Turtle Lake. There Jacob set up a shoe and harness shop. Many long hours were spent in repairing shoes and in late winter and early spring the harness for the work horses. Harness had to be repaired and oiled for the spring work.
After Louise died in May of 1936, Jacob kept his shop going for about eight years before retiring to his garage at home. He did little though due to ill health. He died on April 29th of 1947 at Turtle Lake. He was 79 years, 1 month and 2 days old.
