HEAD ON CRASH ENDS IN DEATH OF McCARTNEY
Car and Truck Collide On the Highway Near Optic On Thursday Night.
Wayne R. McCartney, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCartney, was almost instantly killed In an auto accident near Optic Thursday evening, about eight o'clock, when a car in which he was riding collided head-on with a truck. Willie Shields, son of Bert Shields, suffered a fracture of the skull and his condition was reported this morning as being critical. He was unconscious when picked tip; Darvvood Burwell, son of Dan Burwell, driver of the car, escaped with minor bruises and injuries. Jess Foss, of Shelton, driver of the truck, likewise escaped with minor bruises. According to Burwell, as told County Attorney E. G. Reed; and Deputy Sheriff George Sears, the boys, riding in a Marquette, were going east. Just beyond Optic, Burwell says, he saw the truck, loaded with wheat, approaching. He swung out to pass, but at that moment he states another car pulled up from behind the truck, this machine traveling without lights. Burwell sought to swing in again, but hooked on the truck.
Today Burwell. according to his mother, stated that he may have been mistaken about a third car on the scene and that he felt certain the truck was traveling with only one light, this confusing him. Instead of taking to the ditch he hoped to clear the approaching truck, according to his story. The young man is still suffering from a scalp wound, minor Injuries and shock,1 but his injuries are not serious. McCartney was killed almost instantly. Shields suffered a fracture of the skull. Burwell and Foss were able to go to their assistance and Shields was rushed to the hospital here. The body of McCartney was taken to the Bower Funeral Home. The car in which the three boys were riding was completely demolished. The truck was also badly damaged. Impact of the machines was so terrific that both were turned clear around In tho road and the highway was blocked for some time by the debris. An investigation of the accident and its probable cause was undertaken by the county attorney, but It Is not believed that an inquest will be held. At noon today Shields had regained consciousness and was reported as resting easy, with chances for complete recovery in his favor unless complications develop. He had suffered a concussion and possible fracture of the skull, together with minor body bruises.
Arrangements for tho funeral of young McCartney remain to be completed, but the services will In all. probability be held Sunday afternoon. He was a high school student and also a member of the National Guard and it is likely that a military funeral will be arranged.
