By January 14, according to the doctor, it was clear his wounds were mortal. His family and friends rallied and helped, some worked in the sawmill. He signed his last note in April, then received care from April 5th to the 20th. His estate papers show the number of people who turned out to help, almost as if saying, "I helped, too."
