Henry came to America in 1854 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Eliza Kleibocker on 28 September 1856 by Reverend F. Picker at the Independent Evangelical Protestant Church in St. Louis. Henry was a carpenter by trade, primarily making furniture. On 5 May 1861 Henry enrolled for 3 months service in Company C, 5th Regt. of Missouri Infantry Volunteers At the time of enlistment he was described as 5'3", dark complected, blue eyes and dark hair. He worked as carpenter building fortifications around St. Louis. In late June 1861, while putting on a barrack's roof, he was afflicted with sunstroke. He was not treated in a hospital but was taken to his home and tended by his wife. Henry was honorably discharged in September 1861. He moved his family to Washington County, Illinois where they lived until the early 1880s. They then moved to Chicago, Illinois where they resided about 10 years before returning to St. Louis, Missouri. He and Eliza lived in St. Louis the rest of their lives.
