Son of Thomas and Mary Thornton Gresham

The Gresham family originated in Normandy. Edward De Gresse fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, entered England and settled there. Later he dropped "De" from his name, and, to indicate he was a land owner, added the suffix "ham." Under his modified name, Gresham, a Coat of Arms was conferred upon him. During the twelfth century, an Edwaid Gresham founded the town of Gresham in Norfolk Co. From this Edward, the family is traced to Surrey Co. to London and to America.

In 1838 George Gresham and his family came from Lauderdale Co., Ala., to Old Tishomingo Co. and settled on Mackey's Creek in the Bay Springs area.
In 1820 George, the second son of Thomas and Mary Gresham, (b. 12/10/1796 in Georgia) married Margaret Files (b. 1/12/1798).
Margaret was the daughter of James and Sarah Holcomb Files who came to north Alabama from South Carolina.
