CARL HOGLUND, a farmer in the Swedish community of Kenedy, was born in Grinneröd parish, Bohuslän, Sweden, in 1874. His father was a sailor, like many others in the area. He also shared the fate of many sailors, he died at sea. This happened when the son was only a toddler. Carl grew up in the country, went to school and learned farmwork as a youngster.
He went to America in 1896, and the following year he went to Manor, Texas, where he worked for monthly wages for seven years. He was accustomed to farming, cotton farming in particular, and he soon became a tenant farmer in the community of Type near Coupland, where Pastor Fromen had a farm which he leased for several years. He moved to Kenedy in 1913. He bought a piece of unimproved land which he soon cleared and ploughed. Like the other settlers in this community he had to work hard to clear and cultivate the land that was thickly covered with cactus and mesquite. Swedish tenacity and perseverance has conquered these obstacles and a beautiful community has been created.
Mrs. Hoglund was Selma Elisabeth Gustafson before her marriage. She was born in Falköping,Västergöland, in 1876, and has lived in this country since 1896. Her brother, Carl Gustafson, lived in Type, Williamson County, Texas, where she came when she arrived from Sweden. She married there in 1907. They have one foster son, Arthur born in 1907. They are members of the Swedish Lutheran congregation.
