William resided in Stanly County and was by occupation a clerk prior to enlisting in Company H (Stanly Marksmen), 14th North Carolina infantry in Stanly County at the age of 20 on May 5, 1861. He mustered in as a Private and was promoted to Sergeant on August 26, 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant to rank from April 26, 1861. He was present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. He rejoined the company prior to January 1, 1863 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 1, 1864. He was present or accounted for until wounded in the left foot and captured at Winchester, Virginia on September 19, 1864. He was hospitalized at Winchester and Baltimore, Maryland until he was confined at Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland on November 23, 1864. He was transferred to Old Capital yankee prison, DC on January 2, 1865 and was then transferred to Fort Delaware yankee prison, Delaware on February 3, 1865. He was released from Fort Delaware on June 14, 1865.

Received from P Worley: A listing was received from the current Stanly County Sheriff (Rick Burris) indicating William was the 7th Sheriff of Stanly County. He served from 1875-1879. His father, was the 1st Stanly County Sheriff from 1841-1844.
