Richard Fitzwilliam was a descendent of the local merchant Sir Mathew Decker and rests in his tomb. Richard's significance is that he acquired a very considerable library and art collection, and, uder the terms of his will, he set up the beautiful Fitzwilliam Museum, in Cambridge. He was educated at Trinity College, getting his M.A. in 1764. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1789 and was, at one time, M.P. for Wilton in Wiltshire.
