Spr Roy was killed in an explosion near Patrol Base Pimon, in Nad-e Ali, Helmand province. He was travelling in a convoy when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb.
Aged 28, from Dipton, near Consett, County Durham. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers in October 2005 as a combat signaller and later completed training as a combat engineer. He served a tour in Iraq from November 2007 to May 2008 and completed courses to upgrade his qualifications. Having passed the Potential Non Commissioned Officer Cadre and recently deployed to Afghanistan, he was due for promotion to lance corporal in June. Described as intelligent, hardworking and resilient, "Daz" was a supportive mentor to younger members of his unit. He also enjoyed football and was an ardent fan of Liverpool FC.
The family of Sapper Roy issued the following statement: "We will miss Daryn's happy-go-lucky personality and his cheeky smile so much. He loved the Army and he lived his life without regrets. The whole family wishes to express our deep love and pride for Daryn and celebrate his fantastic life." He leaves behind his mother Carol, father Alan, brother Terry, sister Carol, girlfriend Cheryl Edgar and other family and friends.
Funeral with full military honours was held on May 21, 2010 at St John's Church, Dipton.
