Joshua Ervin Inman was the fifth child and third son of Joshua and Mary Inman. He married Vilinda Swanger on September 11, 1853, in Haywood Co., NC.
The Roster of NC Troops does not mention the death of Ervin Inman. It states that he enlisted at age 23 on June 29, 1861, and that he was present or accounted for through February 1864. It also states that the NC Division of Archives and History has no further record of Ervin Inman.
Ervin was part of Co. F of the 25th NC Regiment. He was in the battle of Malvern Hill. Family history says that he became ill with typhoid fever in Virginia sometime in late August of 1862. He was listed in the Chimborazo Hospital through November when he was moved to a hospital in Danville, VA.
His brother, Hezekiah, told the family that he and his brothers Pinkney and Ervin were at the Battle of the Crater, the "blow up" with Lee's Army in VA. This took place on July 30, 1864. Ervin was severely wounded. Hezzie cared for Ervin until he died, then built a coffin and buried Ervin in Virginia.
