A RUSH COUNTY RETROSPECTIVE, VOL. 2, P. 386-387; BIOGRAPHY OF CLARK AND FRANCES KENNEDY OFFUTT FAMILY:
States that "John Offutt lost his life while serving the
Confederacy." [Not true. Must have seemed a plausible story; apparently he deserted Priscilla and Frank Offutt; she later divorced him.]

[No one has ever found Civil War records listing John as a Confederate soldier. Whether he fought in the war and was badly injured or whether he was ill with a disease, we will never know. But it is felt that he died in Galesburg, Illinois in 1861. But in 1861, he was only 26 years old!]
