Information from Marie (Ames) Sprague, granddaughter of Mildred: After Mildred's mother died, Mildred was first put in the care of her second cousin, Susie (Ulmer) Davis, wife of Richard Davis of Cushing, Maine. Soon thereafter Mildred was put in the care of her aunt Alwilda (Crouse) Davis, wife of James B. Davis of Cushing. Somewhat later Alwilda and Mildred's father, Mark Crouse, had a disagreement, so Mark took Mildred and put her in the care of Mame Watts, a spinster who lived in Thomaston, Maine. Miss Watts wanted to adopt Mildred, but when Alwilda's husband found out about this he went to Thomaston and brought Mildred back to Cushing, where she stayed with Alwilda and Jim and had no further contact with her father until she became an adult. Mildred lived most of her life in Cushing. After the death of her second husband she lived for a few years in Stow, Maine, near her sister Jessie, where she kept house for Merton Eastman, a widowed farmer.
