Mary Ann Smith, born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky on 21 May 1831, the fourth of six children of Levi Smith (1796-1890) and Charity "Houk" Smith (1804-1890). She married William Harve Adams on 4 Feb 1857 in Rockcastle County. Together they had one daughter and six sons; William F. James L, Joseph F, Andrew J, Martha R, Albert G and John P.

Mary Ann is listed in the 1850 Rockcastle Census with her father Levi, again in 1860, 1870 and 1880 with her husband William and her children. She is listed in the 1900 Rockcastle County Census for the last time living with two of her sisters Nancy Smith (1826-1911) and Matilda "Smith" Potts (1825-1914).

Mary Ann lived in Rockcastle County for a little over 27 years after the death of her husband. Mary Ann is buried alongside her husband William Harve and son Albert Gene in a small plot of the original McClary Cemetery on what was locally called the "Old Uncle Bogue Smith Farm". The cemetery is situated in a peaceful hollow about 2500 feet NNW of the final resting place of both her parents and the Oak Hill Cemetery.
