At a very early age he moved with his parents to Pella, Iowa, which at that time was a very small place. They remained at Pella for about ten years and were among its early pioneers.
On Aug 10, 1870 he was married to Jennie Swank and settled on what is known to the cheldren as the Old Home place located in the Salem community three miles north of Lynnville.
To this union were born ten children all are living except one daughter who died at the age of nine months.
The children are Mrs. L.J. Miller and Mrs. Nellie Enfield of Newton; Mrs Frank Brown and Mrs. O.M. Thompson of Lynnville; Louie and Ira of Oskaloosa; Mrs. J.T. Shaw of Taintor; Willie of Searsboro and Johnnie of Des Moines.
The wife and mother preceeded her husband only a short time ago; her death occuring on October 2nd last.
Besides his children he is survived by two brothers, Ira and Baker De Bruyn of Pella and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Efnor of Newton and Mrs. Frank Mick of Walnut, Iowa. There are also thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
John De Bruyn has been a resident of Jasper county for forty-five years, living twenty-one on the farm, thirteen in Lynnville and the last four months with his daughter and husband Mrs and Mr. L.J. Miller of Newton.
Early in life he united with the Methodist church, holding his membership in that church until about fifteen years ago he joined the Friends Church in Lynn
