A Civil War veteran, he enlisted - overstating his age by three years - and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 30, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery, and honorably discharged with the battery June 23, 1865, in Philadelphia. It is not known he were living in Lancaster County at the time of his enlistment. His brother George served in the same battery.
He married Rebecca M Lamborn February 22, 1870, in Cochranville, Chester County, and fathered Effa May (b. 07/30/78 - married Frederick M. Coates), Paul (b. 01/17/81), Roy Leslie (b. 11/23/85), Esther Ellen (b. 12/23/70, d. 04/21/71), and Marshal Lamborn (b. 01/21/76, d. 08/01/77).
