Fire Near "Movies" Causes Near Panics

Two large crowds in different motion picture shows in the East End were thrown into a near panic when fire was discovered in the store of the Peerless Wall Paper Co., 6019 Penn ave. last evening. The audiences smelled the smoke which filtered in from each side of the building where the fire originated and hurried into the street. In the Rex theater there were 400 persons watching the show and Manager C. J. Rosler succeeded in getting the crowd into the street in safety, while Miss Garnet Bigley continued to play the piano. There were about 800 persons in the Bijou Dream and a panic was averted when Mrs. Flora Herrick, the owner shouted to the audience to keep their seats as the fire was next door. The orchestra continued to play and Ray Mentzer the operator was almost overcome with smoke as he continued to throw pictures on the screen until all had left the building. The damage to the wall paper store will be about $2,500.
