LUCILLE AQUA

Lucille V. Aqua Lucille Virginia Aqua was born on 1/5/1919 to parents William and Addie Poole in Spokane, WA. After growing up in Spokane, Lucille graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing, and went on to lead a long and dedicated life as a registered nurse. Her career included work as a decorated member of the US Army Nurse Corps during World War II, an operating-room nurse, home health care provider, instructor, and several years at Goodwill Industries as a rehab. nurse. She worked for many years at Lakewood Hospital, where she helped to organize the original surgical department. She married Sidney Aqua in 1951, and raised their 3 children, Marilyn, Debbie and David, in Lakewood, WA. She was an active supporter of her children's many activities, and loved music, theatre, gardening, and travel. She especially enjoyed her trips to Israel and to Europe, where she visited her son and attended the birth of her granddaughter. The family also enjoyed many years spent at their Ashford cabin, "Chalet Shalom," near Mt. Rainier. Lucille was a charter member of Temple Beth El in Tacoma, where she was also active in the Temple Sisterhood and the National Council of Jewish Women, serving as president of the Tacoma Chapter in the 1960's. After Sidney's death in 1985, Lucille shared her home with her mother Addie, caring for her until Addie's death in 1995. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Sid, daughter Marilyn, and infant son Benjamin. Lucille is survived by her son David (Barbara), daughter Debbie Birkey (Paul), grandchildren Emily, Ben, Leah, and Nicole, her nieces and nephews, and many life-long friends. The family wishes to thank the exceptional staff at Orchard Park Care Center for their kindness and care during Lucille's stay there. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 2:00pm, at the Home of Peace Cemetery , 5421 Steilacoom Blvd., in Lakewood, WA. Memorial donations may be made to The Rose Sherman Fund , c/o Temple Beth El, 5975 S. 12th Street, Tacoma, or to Goodwill Industries of Tacoma.
