His parents were Ivan and Elma (Hudson) Shires.
Orlin grew up on a farm outside of Mason City, NE. and graduated from Ansley High in 1936. attending college at Hastings, NE. He lettered in football and was named to the All Conference Football Team.
Also lettering in track, he set college records in the high hurdles and long jump. He went on to participate in the national AAU Track Meet in New York. where he placed second in the high hurdles.
He was the grandson of one-time Pawnee City minister Fletcher Hudson.
He served in the Medical Regiment of the Nebraska National Guard from 1939 to 1942. For WW II, he served on active duty with the U.S. Naval REserve aboard the U.S.S. Sedestrom, a destroyer escort, and participated in many engagements in the Pacific as Gunnery and Exceutive Officer, including the battle for Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Shires also served as the ship's chaplain. After the war he was active in a chapter of National Civil Defense.
Orlin graduated from Hasting's College in 1940, and then taught at Burwell, NE. where he met Helen Louise Matthews, daughter of Homer and Clara Matthews of Peru, Ne. area. Orlin and Louise married during the war and took up residence in California at war's end.
Orlin earned his master's and doctorate degrees at the Univ. of CA., Los Angeles, but he and Louise made their home in the small town of Porterville, CA.
Upon retirement Orlin and Louise spent their summers in Nebraska on Louise's farm east of Auburn, Ne. where his son Preston and his daughter-in-law Sylvie resided later.
Orlin was preceded by his parents, Ivan and Elma Shires, his brother Roger, and sisters Janet, Wilma, and Loreta. He is survived by Louise, his wife of 64 years; his children and their spouses. Pamela and Thomas Sneddon (Santa Barbara, CA.) Priscilla and Ryan Cox (Elk Grove, CA.) Patrick and Anne Shires (San Andreas, CA. ) Paul and Julie Shires (Arroyo Grande, CA.) Preston and Sylvie Shires(Peru,NE.) 20 grandchildren. and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 14, 2007 at the Bethel Community Church followed by a graveside service, with an American Legion honor guard, at the Nemaha, NE. Cemetery.
